INTRODUCTION TO BOHOL
Bohol is one of our favourite places in the Philippines and not only because it is Harline’s home province. I can visit the Chocolate Hill many times and never get tired and the beaches of Panglao are as good as any you will see elsewhere in the Philippines.
Bohol is also famous for the Tarsier. These tiny primates with bulging eyes are actually the smallest primates in the world and are endemic to the South East of Philippines, but mainly found in Bohol. It is an endangered species with number dwindling and there is a sanctuary and conservation area on the island. They are very shy and prefer to stay away from human contact, which we didn’t realise when we first visited the sanctuary, so we do not intend to go again.
Another prime (touristy) location is the Loboc River, where you can enjoy good food and music in one of the floating restaurants that sail up and down the river.
Then factor into that hidden gems not on the normal tourist trail like Camugao Falls and Bohol is a must go destination if you are visiting the Philippines.
Bohol was hit by a very strong earthquake a few years ago, but thankfully Harline’s family was okay. We visited them a week or so after the main quake and experienced a very strong aftershock of 5.2 which was quite scary, so we can only imagine what the original quake was like.
WHERE IS BOHOL ?
Bohol is situated in the Visayas region of the Philippines and just a short hop across from Cebu
HOW TO GET TO BOHOL BY AIR
Up until a few years ago the way into Bohol by air was through Tagbilaran Airport, which was just a short ride into the main tourist area on Panglao. However it wasn’t able to cope with the increasing number of tourist to Bohol and therefore in 2018 Bohol-Panglao International Airport was opened. Being on Panglao island it was also closer to the main tourist destinations and accommodation.
Flights into Bohol come mainly from domestic aiports but there are flights from Korea to satisfy the growing popularity from that part of the world.
